When Two Worlds Collide in the Most Deeply Romantic Way

Planned & Curated by Ikigaii Planners

Their Poem

“In a world where birds are meant to sing songs,

flowers to bloom, dragonflies to flutter —

How is it that when we lock eyes,

It is my heart that sings and soul that melts like butter?”

— Mara’s ode to Rohan

A Love That Broke Every Rule

Every wedding we plan is a universe of its own, but some weddings reach into your chest and rearrange something. Mara and Rohan’s celebration was one of those. An intercultural love story that crossed borders, defied logic, and arrived, beautifully, at a moment of pure, unrelenting joy.

As their planners, we had the honour of translating their extraordinary bond into five days of ceremonies, laughter, colour, and tears. What followed was nothing short of magical.

“Despite all of these seemingly binding, confining, restricting rules,  we found a way to break them. We found a way to find each other in the most irrational, unrelenting, and deeply romantic way.

Family Get Together

Two families. One beautiful union.

There is nothing quite like watching two families from different worlds come together and realise they are not so different after all. The Family Get Together was an intimate, sunlit gathering set against a lush garden backdrop, the kind of event that feels like a long Sunday afternoon with people you have always known.

Rohan’s father raised a toast that left not a single dry eye in the room: ‘My wife tells me that he’s exactly the kind of husband that every man aspires to be. This man is special, guys. A big cheer to my son Rohan.’ The pride in his voice was palpable,  a father watching his son step into a life well-chosen.

We curated this event as a relaxed, garden-party-style afternoon. The family photographs radiate warmth, everyone dressed in soft blues, whites, and creams, set against open skies and the natural green of the venue. This was not just a meet-and-greet. It was the beginning of a new family.

“Like all mothers, I have always hoped that one day my daughter will find a partner who shares her values, respects her spirit, and stands beside her. Mara, in Rohan, you have found all of that and more.”

Haldi & Mehendi

Colour, ritual & the turmeric blessing

There is something deeply spiritual about the Haldi ceremony,  the act of applying turmeric paste as a blessing, a purification, a rite of passage before two people become one. For Mara, a bride stepping into an Indian wedding tradition that was not her own by birth,  it was also an act of love. She embraced every ritual with open arms and an open heart.

The event was draped in the quintessential palette of a Haldi,  marigold oranges, sun yellows, and the vibrant energy of close family gathered in circles of laughter. Rohan, dressed in a yellow and gold kurta, was surrounded by his most beloved, his father, his brothers, his people. The intimacy of the ceremony was preserved by keeping the setup grounded: flower-covered seating areas, brass plates of haldi paste, marigold torans framing the entrance, and the scent of flowers and festivities in the air.

The mehendi portion of the day saw Mara’s hands adorned with intricate henna artistry,  delicate paisleys, fine filigree, and floral trails that wound from fingertip to wrist. The craftsperson’s hand moved with the precision of a painter, and the result was a masterpiece worn on skin.

The Mehendi Evening

Henna, music & the women who hold her heart

If the Haldi belonged to the family, the Mehendi Evening belonged to joy. Close-up photographs from this ceremony reveal the artistry in stunning detail, a bride’s hand resting on pale blue fabric, henna wound in exquisite patterns across her fingers and palm. It is one of the most intimate and beautiful images from the entire celebration.

We designed the Mehendi event as a sunlit, floral affair, with soft fabrics, cushioned seating, and a light fragrance of roses in the air. Mara wore a traditional ensemble befitting the ceremony while her closest friends and family sat around her, their laughter threading through the afternoon like music. The event carried the warmth of a girl’s afternoon stretched into a golden evening.

The photographs from this ceremony are intimate, tactile, and full of feeling. The close-up of Mara’s mehndi-adorned hand is a portrait all on its own,  proof that some of the most beautiful details are the ones held close.

The Wedding

The moment the whole world held its breath

And then, the day itself. After days of celebrations, rituals, family, food, music, and meaning, the wedding ceremony arrived with the quiet authority of something inevitable. It had always been leading here.

The ceremony was set outdoors, and the venue was breathtaking in its simplicity. Rows of pristine white chairs lined a wide open lawn, each draped with soft white fabric and flanked by fresh floral arrangements. A canopied mandap, white and sheer, framed in cascading florals, stood at the end of the aisle, open to the sky above. The early morning light bathed the entire setup in gold, as if nature itself had come dressed for the occasion.

The aisle was long and deliberate — we designed it this way on purpose. Every step Mara took toward Rohan was a step that deserved to be remembered. The ceremony balanced the spiritual weight of a traditional Indian wedding with the cross-cultural nuances of Mara’s own heritage, creating a ritual that was entirely, uniquely theirs.

“I think that we move in a bubble. Everything else might change with or around us — but we maintain a relationship that feels fresh but long-lasting at the same time.”

The Reception Night

Glamour, glow & a night to remember

Then came the night that sparkled. The Reception was a full-blown celebration, lights turned low, music turned up, and a couple at the centre of it all who had waited long enough to finally, officially celebrate their love with the world.

Mara arrived in a deep jewel-toned saree,  rich and luminous under the event lights, her elegance unmistakable. Beside her, her closest friend, equally radiant in blush pink, matched her energy with the kind of joy that only a best friend brings to your wedding night. The two of them, photographed mid-celebration with drinks in hand, wide smiles, and the glow of fairy lights behind them, is one of the most alive images from the entire wedding.

We designed the Reception with layered lighting, warm spotlights on the stage, string lights weaving through the ceiling, and floral installations that caught the glow. The dance floor came alive well before midnight. The bar was set, the speeches were warm and hilarious in equal measure, and the love was electric.

Their Story

From the Airport to Forever

Mara still remembers it clearly. The drive from the airport to the hotel,  that was the moment. She looked across at Rohan and thought: This guy is actually real. Everything she had hoped for, written about, and imagined in quiet moments, was sitting right there in a car with her. He was everything she wanted.

And Rohan? He may not have mapped it all out from the start. He didn’t know for certain that he would marry this woman, but he knew, in the way you know things that matter, that she was going to be part of his story. That quiet certainty is, perhaps, the most romantic kind of knowing.

Theirs is a love crossed cultures, continents, and conventions. A love that found its way through all the rules, the distances, the differences, and arrived exactly where it was always meant to.

WITH LOVE, ALWAYS

Here’s to Mara & Rohan

A wedding is just one day,  but a love like this? That’s a lifetime of chapters still to be written. From every flower we placed, every light we hung, every detail we obsessed over in the weeks leading up to this, it was all for this. For you.

Congratulations, Mara and Rohan. May your bubble never burst, and may every year feel as fresh and as deeply romantic as the day you found each other.
