And Why It Has Less To Do With The Destination Than You Think
When most people think about destination weddings, they imagine beaches, palaces, luxury resorts and beautiful photographs.
And yes, all of those things are part of it.
But after years of planning weddings across Dubai, Rajasthan, Bahrain, Thailand and beyond, I’ve realised something.
The best destination weddings aren’t really about the destination.
They’re about bringing people together.
And that’s why more couples are choosing them than ever before.
It Usually Starts With A Vision
Every destination wedding begins with a dream.
For some couples, it’s a palace in Rajasthan.
For others, it’s a luxury resort in Bahrain, a beachfront celebration in Thailand, or a multi-day wedding in Dubai.
The destination changes.
But the reason is often the same.
They want to create an experience.
Not just host an event.
A wedding lasts a few hours.
An experience lasts for days.
And the memories last much longer.
Experience Over Guest Count
One of the biggest misconceptions about destination weddings is that they’re about luxury or showing off.
In reality, many couples choose destination weddings for exactly the opposite reason.
They want fewer distractions.
Less pressure.
More quality time with the people who matter most.
I’ve had couples tell me they chose a destination wedding because they wanted the wedding to feel like their wedding, not a community event.
Instead of inviting everyone they’ve ever met, they would rather spend meaningful time with the people closest to them.
And while no Indian wedding is ever completely free from family politics, destination weddings do change the dynamic.
Once everyone arrives, they’re sharing the same experience.
Travelling together.
Eating together.
Celebrating together.
People stop being spectators.
They become participants.
And that’s where the magic starts.
Why Parents Eventually Come Around
Parents are usually the most hesitant in the beginning.
And honestly, it’s understandable.
They’re thinking about logistics.
Travel.
Guest comfort.
The unknown.
Questions like:
“How will this work?”
“Who’s going to take care of everything?”
But something interesting happens.
Once they visit the destination.
Meet the planners.
See the venues.
Understand the process.
They relax.
And by the wedding week, they’re often enjoying themselves just as much as the couple.
Sometimes even more.
The Magic Nobody Talks About
One of my favourite things about destination weddings happens after the events are over.
The music stops.
Everyone changes into comfortable clothes.
And instead of going home, people stay.
They gather in small groups.
They sit together.
They talk until late at night.
No agenda.
No schedule.
No formalities.
Just quality time.
Those moments are incredibly difficult to create in a traditional city wedding where guests attend for a few hours and leave.
And yet those are often the moments people remember most.
Not the flowers.
Not the stage.
Not the table settings.
The conversations.
The laughter.
The time spent together.
Are Destination Weddings More Expensive?
Not always.
Another misconception is that destination weddings automatically cost more.
Sometimes they do.
Sometimes they don’t.
A destination wedding with 150 guests can often be comparable to a large city wedding with 1,000 or more guests.
The numbers simply move around differently.
You’re spending on experiences rather than scale.
Quality rather than quantity.
And for many couples, that’s a trade they’re happy to make.
Final Thought
When couples ask me whether they should have a destination wedding, I rarely start by discussing hotels, flights or budgets.
I start with one question:
“What experience do you want people to remember?”
Because once that answer becomes clear, the destination usually follows.
The best destination weddings aren’t defined by where they happen.
They’re defined by how they make people feel.
And perhaps that’s why more couples are choosing them today than ever before.
If you’re considering a destination wedding in Dubai, Rajasthan, Bahrain, Thailand or anywhere else in the world, start with the experience you want to create before choosing the destination itself.
Everything else becomes much easier after that.
