Why Sri Lanka is Asia’s most underrated beach wedding destination

Picture your pheras under a floral mandap, the Indian Ocean behind you, a Kandyan drummer’s beat rising as the sun drops into the sea. That is the promise of the best beach wedding venues in Sri Lanka, and it is why more couples from Dubai, India and the UK are choosing the island over Goa, Thailand and the Maldives.

Sri Lanka gives you three things few destinations combine. Short flights: roughly 4.5 hours from Dubai and under 1.5 hours from Chennai or Bengaluru. Resorts big enough for a 300-guest, four-day Indian wedding. And two coasts with opposite monsoons, so there is a beach in season almost every month of the year.

The scale is real. In March 2026, Shangri-La Hambantota hosted a four-day destination wedding for over 800 international guests from the UAE, India and the UK, endorsed by Sri Lanka’s tourism and convention bureaus.

At Ikigaii Planners, we plan destination weddings across Sri Lanka’s coastline, from intimate vows for 40 to multi-day celebrations for 500. This guide covers the venues we shortlist most often, what each does best, when to go, and what to budget.

The 8 best beach wedding venues in Sri Lanka

1. Shangri-La Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa: for the biggest celebrations

If your guest list runs into the hundreds, start here. The resort spreads across 58 hectares on the south coast, with ocean lawns, a golf course and a large pillarless ballroom. In March 2026 it hosted a four-day, 21-event wedding for more than 800 guests, closing with a sunset nikah over the Indian Ocean.

  • Best for: 300 to 800 guests, multi-day Indian, Pakistani and fusion weddings
  • Why couples love it: space to run sangeet, haldi and reception in different settings without repeating a backdrop
  • Planner’s note: it is the farthest venue from Colombo airport on this list, so budget for coach transfers or a charter flight for guests

2. Weligama Bay Marriott Resort & Spa: big capacity, every room facing the sea

Set in the middle of Weligama Bay near Mirissa, every one of its 198 rooms faces the ocean with a private balcony. The Pool Lawn holds up to 600 guests and the Pearl Ballroom handles indoor receptions.

  • Best for: 200 to 600 guests who want a modern, international-brand resort
  • Why couples love it: the oceanfront lawn makes a dramatic phera or reception setting at sunset
  • Planner’s note: whale-watching season off Mirissa makes a great guest excursion between functions

3. Anantara Kalutara Resort: ocean on one side, river on the other

Anantara Kalutara sits where the Kalu Ganga meets the Indian Ocean, so you get beach, garden and lagoon views in one property. The beach cove, riverside garden and ocean-and-lagoon-view ballroom each hold up to 350 guests. It is also the closest venue on this list to Colombo.

  • Best for: 100 to 350 guests who want short airport transfers
  • Why couples love it: a Kandyan drummer procession or a Western ceremony, both on offer
  • Planner’s note: the resort’s legal wedding packages need a minimum 4-night stay for paperwork.

4. Taj Bentota Resort & Spa: Indian hospitality on Bentota beach

About 90 minutes from Colombo, Taj Bentota sits on a headland above Bentota beach with 160 rooms. Its beach-facing Banquet Lawn takes up to 350 guests, the Sea View Terrace suits a 150-guest cocktail, and the Orchid ballroom opens onto both lawn and sand.

  • Best for: 150 to 350 guests, especially families who know and trust the Taj brand
  • Why couples love it: Indian kitchens that understand jain, vegetarian and regional menus
  • Planner’s note: pair it with a boat-access cocktail at a nearby island resort for a memorable second venue

5. Cinnamon Bentota Beach: Geoffrey Bawa’s landmark between river and sea

Designed by Geoffrey Bawa, Cinnamon Bentota Beach sits between the Bentota River and the ocean, so you can hold a riverside mehendi and a beachfront wedding in one stay. With 150+ rooms, lawns and a banquet hall, it handles the full mehendi-to-reception sequence. Read our full Cinnamon Bentota wedding guide.

  • Best for: 150 to 300 guests, multi-day Indian and South Asian weddings
  • Why couples love it: the architecture photographs beautifully with lighter décor

6. Jetwing Lighthouse, Galle: heritage romance by the fort

Another Bawa design, Jetwing Lighthouse sits on the rocks just outside UNESCO-listed Galle Fort. Ceremonies can run on the coastal lawn, at the Jetwing Lighthouse Club next door, or on the rocks at the shore, with Eddystone Hall seating up to 250.

  • Best for: 80 to 250 guests who want character over scale
  • Why couples love it: a pre-wedding shoot inside Galle Fort’s colonial streets
  • Planner’s note: couple-only ceremony packages start at USD 2,250; guest functions are priced separately

7. Heritance Ahungalla: Sri Lanka’s first five-star beach resort

Heritance Ahungalla is Bawa-designed and is billed as Sri Lanka’s first five-star beach resort, offering both beach vows and ballroom receptions. Its 152 rooms sit on a palm-lined beach about 15 km south of Bentota.

  • Best for: 100 to 250 guests wanting a calmer, wide beach
  • Why couples love it: the famous infinity pool that seems to spill into the sea

8. Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle: intimate luxury on a private cove

For smaller, high-end weddings, Tangalle is hard to beat. The resort sits in a coconut plantation above a golden cove, and its cliff-top Peace Haven Bungalow hosts up to 200 guests with panoramic ocean views.

  • Best for: 40 to 200 guests, villa-style luxury weekends
  • Why couples love it: privacy, and sunsets from a clifftop rather than a crowded beach

Bonus: the east coast for May to September weddings

When the south-west monsoon hits Bentota and Galle, Sri Lanka’s east coast has calm seas and dry weather from May to September. Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Pasikudah suit intimate summer weddings, though venues there are smaller and further from Colombo.

Best time for a beach wedding in Sri Lanka

December to April is peak season on the west and south coasts, where all eight venues above sit; May to September belongs to the east coast.

October, November and early December are shoulder months on the south-west coast: better rates, but plan a covered backup for every outdoor function. Whatever the month, schedule beach ceremonies for late afternoon, when the heat drops and the light turns gold.

Is a beach wedding in Sri Lanka legally valid?

Yes, foreign couples can register their marriage in Sri Lanka. You submit documents to the Additional District Registrar for the area where you marry:

  • Valid passports for both partners
  • Original birth certificates
  • A certified, legalised free-to-marry or single-status document (plus divorce papers if applicable)
  • A valid Sri Lankan tourist visa or ETA

If neither partner has lived in Sri Lanka for the previous 10 days, one partner must have been in the country for at least 4 days before giving notice. After the wedding, the certificate must be legalised by Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be recognised abroad.

Many Indian couples keep it simple: hold the religious ceremony on the beach in Sri Lanka, and register the marriage legally at home. Rules change, so confirm requirements with the registrar or your embassy before you book.

What does a beach wedding in Sri Lanka cost?

Sri Lanka is usually more affordable than Dubai or the Maldives for the same five-star standard, but the total depends on four things:

  1. Guest count and number of functions: venue and catering is the biggest line item, multiplied across every event.
  2. Room blocks: most resorts ask for a minimum number of nights for an exclusive or large wedding; negotiate group rates early.
  3. Décor and production: mandap, florals, stage, sound and lighting for sangeet and reception.
  4. Imported vendors: pandits, Indian chefs, choreographers, DJs and hair and makeup flown in from India or the UAE.

For reference, couple-only ceremony packages at Jetwing Lighthouse run USD 2,250 to 3,000. A full multi-day Indian wedding is a different scale entirely, which is why we build an itemised, venue-specific budget before you sign anything. See our packages.

Getting guests there

  • Flights: Colombo is about 4.5 hours from Dubai and roughly 1.5 hours from Chennai or Bengaluru, with direct flights from most Indian metros.
  • Visas: most guests, including Indian passport holders and UAE residents, apply for Sri Lanka’s ETA online; check current rules before sending invites.
  • Transfers: Kalutara and Bentota are the easiest drives from the airport; Weligama, Tangalle and Hambantota need longer coach transfers, so plan arrival-day buffers.
  • Save the dates: send them 6+ months out, with a guest website covering visas, transfers and dress codes for beach functions.

Indian wedding essentials on a Sri Lankan beach

  • Pheras and havan: check the venue’s open-flame policy on the beach and plan wind shields for the agni.
  • Baraat: some resorts allow a beach or driveway baraat with dhol; others cap music after 10 pm.
  • Food: confirm Indian chefs, jain and vegetarian menus, and live counters in writing.
  • Local flavour: add Kandyan drummers to your baraat or welcome dinner; guests love it.

How to choose the right beach wedding venue in Sri Lanka

Match the venue to your guest count first, then to the feel you want.

  • Over 350 guests: Shangri-La Hambantota or Weligama Bay Marriott
  • 150 to 350 guests, easy access: Anantara Kalutara, Taj Bentota or Cinnamon Bentota Beach
  • Design-led and photogenic: Cinnamon Bentota, Heritance Ahungalla or Jetwing Lighthouse, all by Geoffrey Bawa
  • Under 150 guests, maximum privacy: Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle
  • A summer date: look at the east coast instead

Frequently asked questions

What is the best beach wedding venue in Sri Lanka?

It depends on guest count. For 300+ guests, Shangri-La Hambantota and Weligama Bay Marriott lead. For 150 to 350, Anantara Kalutara, Taj Bentota and Cinnamon Bentota Beach are the top picks. For intimate weddings, choose Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle.

When is the best time for a beach wedding in Sri Lanka?

December to April on the west and south coasts, including Bentota, Galle and Weligama. For May to September dates, the east coast around Trincomalee and Pasikudah is drier.

Can we host a large Indian wedding on a Sri Lankan beach?

Yes. Several resorts host multi-day Indian weddings, and Shangri-La Hambantota held an 800-guest celebration in 2026. Check fire, music-curfew and catering rules for each function.

Is a beach wedding in Sri Lanka legally recognised?

Yes, if registered with the local Additional District Registrar and legalised by Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs afterwards. Many couples hold the ceremony in Sri Lanka and register at home instead.

How far in advance should we book?

10 to 12 months for December to March dates at popular resorts; 6 to 8 months is possible in shoulder season.

Do guests need a visa for Sri Lanka?

Most nationalities, including Indian passport holders and UAE residents, apply for an online Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). Confirm current rules before sending invitations.

Do we need a wedding planner for a Sri Lanka beach wedding?

For anything beyond a couple-only ceremony, yes. A planner coordinates local and imported vendors, room blocks, guest transfers and weather backups so you can enjoy the trip.
